Winter in Playa del Inglés: a guide to long stays

Weather, health cover, emergencies and practical tips for spending a month or more in Playa del Inglés in winter, checked at official sources.

Many visitors from colder countries spend a month or more in Gran Canaria in winter. This guide gathers what the official sources say, so you can plan with confidence.

The weather

According to Spain’s tourism site, average winter temperatures in the Canary Islands are around 20 °C and it rarely rains. Gran Canaria’s tourism site describes the climate as mild and pleasant almost all year round, and says that on the coast, above all in the south, the climate is dry and sunny. It gives the sea temperature as 18° in the winter months and 22° the rest of the year, and mentions around 2,700 hours of sunshine.

The island has many microclimates: conditions change quickly when you climb inland and upwards, so if you go on a day trip to the mountains, check the forecast first. For the forecast on the coast, see AEMET’s forecast for Maspalomas beach, or watch the Maspalomas live webcam.

What to pack

Spain’s tourism site says you won’t need warm scarves or coats, and that you can bring a swimsuit or buy one locally.

Staying a month or more

Long stays are welcome at Moon Dunes. The apartment has a fully equipped kitchen with a microwave, a washing machine, air conditioning, high-speed Wi-Fi, bed linen and towels included, and free private parking. It sleeps up to 2 guests. The minimum stay varies with the dates, so tell us when you would like to come and we will help you plan: contact us.

Rules on how long you can stay depend on your nationality: please check them on official government sources before you book.

Health cover and emergencies

If you are insured in an EU country, the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) gives you the same rights to health care as people insured in the country you are staying in, for treatment that cannot wait until you return home. It does not cover private healthcare, rescue and repatriation, or planned treatment, and it does not replace travel insurance: the official page recommends taking out extra insurance for travel risks. You get the card for free from your health insurer before you leave, so avoid websites that ask you to pay.

In an emergency, dial 112, the European emergency number, free of charge from fixed and mobile phones everywhere in the EU. It connects you to the police, ambulance and fire brigade.
